Campbell Smith has been appointed to conserve the existing John Fowler decorative scheme in the Great Hall and South Stair at Grade 1 Listed Kelmarsh Hall in Northampton. The current Fowler decoration dates from the 1950’s and is in a poor state, with peeling and flaking paint that is to be carefully conserved using specialist techniques.
This high profile project has been the subject of debate for several years with proposals ranging from returning to an earlier Gibb scheme, to designing a new scheme in the spirit of Nancy Lancaster. Our work will be closely scrutinised by those who contributed to the earlier discussions and the wider worlds of conservation and the decorative arts.
Our project manager, Alexandra Miller, an ICON accredited conservator, and her team appreciate the importance of the works and the skill and attention that will be required so that this important scheme is conserved and restored to be appreciated for years to come.
