Brasenose College
Radcliffe Sq, Oxford
Campbell Smith & Co ltd was appointed to carry conservation work to the notable James Wyatt ceiling and columns of the library in this Grade I listed building, which sits in a conservation area of the City of Oxford and was added to the existing medieval buildings in the late 18th century; the decoration was completed in 1779.
The project required conservation cleaning, colour matching and gilding, and of particular importance was the re-instatement of the historic four colour scheme to the ceiling. This very detailed and complex decoration incorporates delicate gilded highlights which had to be protected and cleaned on completion of the repainting.
