Knole House Main Hall & Minstrels Gallery

Following on from the award-winning conservation and redecoration of the Gatehouse & Showrooms, Campbell Smith & Co were once again employed to undertake the conservation, restoration and specialist decoration works to the Great Hall and Minstrels Gallery.

Our conservation and specialist decorating team worked to remove disfiguring paint layers to 16th C mouldings, enrichments, and all other areas of the ceiling ribs and beds where paint was failing. Prior to any stripping, samples were removed for analysis, to record and determine paint composition, and trials were undertaken by our conservators.

Decorations to ceilings, walls and windows were undertaken in a combination of soft and casein distemper, hand-tinted in a variety of bespoke colours, matched for the client by Rose of Jericho.
